Foreign Ministry Coming Events: 21 - 28 November 2010

21.11 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in a meeting of the foreign ministers of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg in Brussels. They will discuss Baltic-Benelux relations, topics related to the OSCE, the upcoming European Union-Russia summit, and EU enlargement.

22.11 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in the meeting of the European Union foreign ministers taking place in Brussels. During the General Affairs Council, an overview of the conclusions of the European Council held from 28-29 October will be given and preparations will be made for the session of the European Council to be held from 16-17 December. The working scheme of the European Commission for 2011 will also be introduced. Among the topics to be discussed is the European Commission’s initiative by which it hopes to improve the European Union’s capability, co-ordination and effectiveness in reacting to disasters.
In the Foreign Affairs Council, the foreign minister will discuss the European Union’s relations with strategic partners. Preparations will be made for the European Union-Africa summit, European Union-India summit, European Union-Russia summit, and Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) summit. Other topics to be discussed are developments in the Middle East, Sudan, Iran, Iraq, and Burma/Myanmar.

23.11 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will give a briefing for journalists during which he will address current foreign political topics. The foreign minister will give an overview of the discussion of the European Union foreign ministers in Brussels, including relations with strategic partners like China and India. He will also address the upcoming EU summits with Russia and the OSCE and the situations in the Middle East and Burma/Myanmar.

23-27.11 A training seminar for the European Union’s Eastern Partners will take place in Tallinn. The goal of the seminar organised in co-operation by the Foreign Ministry and the Estonian School of Diplomacy is to improve the management and co-ordination of European Union-related reforms in Eastern Partnership countries. Specialists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus and experts from EU co-ordination structures will participate in the seminar. Within the framework of the training seminar there will be lectures, roundtable discussions, group work, and visits to state institutions. The seminar taking place next week is already the second important project for the support of Eastern Partners taking place in Tallinn this year. The seminar that took place in the spring focused on good administrative practices and public administration.

24.11 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will meet with students at Jüri Upper Secondary School.

25.11 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will meet with Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez, who will be in Estonia for a visit. During the meeting, opportunities for advancing bilateral relations and developments in Latin America will be discussed.

25.11 Consular consultations between Estonia and China will take place in Beijing. Legal and visa issues will be discussed, as well as consular aid matters and an Estonia-China legal aid agreement coming into effect. The Estonian delegation will be led by director general of the consular department Rasmus Lumi.

26.11 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will meet with Foreign Minister of New Zealand Murray McCully, who will be in Estonia for a visit. During their meeting they will discuss Estonia-New Zealand bilateral relations, security issues, and regional matters. The foreign minister of New Zealand also has a meeting scheduled with Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.

26.11 At 14.30 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will speak to students and teachers about the Millennium Development Goals and why Estonia should support these goals before a showing of the film “8” at the Solaris cinema. The film “8” is a collection of eight short films that address the Millennium Development Goals. The screening of the film was organised by the Jaan Tõnisson Institute’s World Education Centre and PÖFF within the framework of the Just Film programme.
