Foreign Ministry Recommends Avoiding Travel to Egypt

31.01.2011

No. 27-E

Due to the further spread of disturbances, the Foreign Ministry is recommending that travel to Egypt be avoided and for those who are currently in Egypt to leave the country.

The Foreign Ministry is recommending that travel agencies that organise trips to Egypt not send any more people to the country and to be in constant contact with their representatives there. The Foreign Ministry stated that if the protests spread to the Red Sea resort areas in Egypt, it is recommended that all Estonian tourists be evacuated from Egypt.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that the protests and violence in Egypt are spreading and in five days the disturbances have claimed over 100 lives. “Communication links and internet connections are severely disrupted, which is unacceptable,” he added. “It is vitally important that the Egyptian authorities and protestors avoid the use of violence,” Paet emphasised.

Political demonstrations and looting have taken place all over Egypt, primarily in the capital Cairo and in other large cities.

The Foreign Ministry is monitoring the situation in Egypt and can provide advice to travellers if necessary. Consular aid can be reached around the clock at the number +372 53 01 9999.
