Estonian To Send Consular Aid Diplomats to Egyptian Resorts

No. 29-E

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that the Foreign Ministry is sending Estonian consular aid diplomats to the Egyptian resort towns of Sharm el-Sheik and Hurghada. “The job of the Estonian consuls is to provide aid and support to Estonian tourists and Estonians who live in the area, to ensure their safety and well-being, to give information about the actual situation, and to monitor the situation on-site,” said Paet.

Paet said that the Estonian Foreign Ministry is in contact with the Finnish Foreign Ministry to discuss opportunities for jointly helping citizens of the two countries leave Egypt. “This morning I spoke to my Finnish colleague Alexander Stubb about the subject, and Finland plans to send a charter flight to bring its citizens home from Cairo. Estonian citizens who are in or nearby Cairo and would like to leave Egypt, and who are able to get to the Cairo airport, will also have an opportunity to leave on this flight,” Paet added.

Estonian Foreign Minister Paet added that the European Union foreign ministers are discussing the situation in Egypt during their meeting this afternoon in Brussels. “The political crisis in Egypt is ongoing and events continue to unfold very quickly, making it hard to predict what will happen next. Many political demonstrations and disturbances have taken place in Egypt, primarily in the capital Cairo and other big cities. The disturbances have already claimed over 100 lives,” he asserted.

Due to the further spread of disturbances, the Foreign Ministry is recommending that travel to Egypt be avoided and for those who are currently in Egypt to leave the country. The situation in the resort towns along the Red Sea has thus far remained peaceful, but guests are recommended not to leave hotel property. The Foreign Ministry recommends that travel agencies that organise trips to Egypt not send any more people to the country and that they should be in constant contact with their representatives there.

The Foreign Ministry is monitoring the situation in Egypt and can provide advice to travellers if necessary. Consular aid can be reached around the clock at the number +372 53 01 9999.
