Foreign Minister Paet Met With Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov

08.02.2011

No. 49-E

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and former Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov discussed matters related to the future and development of Russia.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that a modern and democratic society cannot be built up in Russia without the guarantee of human and civil rights. “Modernisation does not just mean advancing technology and developing the economy, but also the more general aspects involved in building up a rule of law state,” emphasised Foreign Minister Paet.

Paet said that developments in their shared neighbourhood are very important to the relations between the European Union and Russia. “Finding resolutions to the conflict situation in Transnistria in Moldova and the occupied regions of Georgia is also essential,” said the foreign minister.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that Russia joining the World Trade Organisation as soon as possible would increase stability in economic relations between the European Union and Russia.
