Estonia Considers Rapid Ratification of European Union-Brazil Visa Waiver Agreement to be Important

02.03.2011

No. 78-E

On 28 February political consultations between Estonia and Brazil led by Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Kaja Tael took place in Brazil’s capital Brasilia.

At the meetings, the ratification of the Brazil-European Union visa waiver agreement, which would allow Estonian citizens to travel to Brazil visa-free for tourism and business purposes, was discussed with member of the voting commission of the Chamber of Deputies of Congress Augusto Carvalho and foreign and defence commission counsellor of the Federal Senate Eduardo Carvalho. The agreement is currently under review in the legal division of the president’s chancellery and will be presented to Congress next month, according to the government officials. “The rapid ratification of the agreement is very important for the future development of Estonia-Brazil relations,” Kaja Tael affirmed. “We received a clear signal that there are no obstacles for it in the Brazilian Foreign Ministry or Congress.”

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Brazilian citizens have been able to travel to Estonia visa-free for years already, and this year the time should arrive that Estonian citizens can also go to Brazil without a visa. “Estonia is also interested in developing multi-faceted political and economic relations with Brazil,” he added.

Within the framework of political consultations, the intensification of bilateral relations was also discussed. “We are pleased that the preparations for opening a Brazilian embassy in Estonia are well underway, and that in just a few weeks domestic preparations in Brazil should be completed. We await the arrival of the ambassador in Estonia,” said Kaja Tael. Opportunities for trilateral co-operation in the information technology sector were discussed, including introducing Estonia’s IT-related know-how and establishing the use of e-state solutions in many Latin American and African countries. It was agreed that a Brazilian business delegation would visit Estonia in the spring of this year.

In a meeting on 1 March with the board of the Producers’ Association, which brings together 150 000 businesses in Brazil’s economic centre of Sao Paulo, opportunities for giving momentum to Estonia and Brazil’s economic relations within the framework of the upcoming business delegation visit were discussed. Brazilian business circles consider the business conditions in Estonia to be very good, and in the current period of economic growth more and more businesses are interested in looking for co-operation partners in successful European Union member states.

Within the framework of the visit, meetings also took place with the leadership of the Chamber of Commerce of the state of Sao Paulo and the leadership of the Ministry of Tourism of the state of Sao Paulo.
