Foreign Ministry to Send Diplomat to Beirut Today

The Foreign Ministry is co-operating with authorities in Lebanon and other partner countries to resolve the situation regarding the seven Estonian citizens that have been kidnapped in Lebanon. The Foreign Ministry is also sending one of its diplomats to Beirut today.

An interdepartmental crisis commission led by Foreign Minister Urmas Paet convened late at night on 23 March. Foreign Minister Paet has been in contact with the Lebanese authorities. The Lebanese authorities have confirmed that they will help Estonia in any way possible to resolve this situation.

The Foreign Ministry has been in contact with the families of all the kidnapped citizens. The crisis commission will continue working until the situation is resolved.

On 23 March seven Estonian citizens were kidnapped in the city of Zahle in the eastern part of the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, 53 kilometres east of Beirut.
