Seventh Estonian Honorary Consulate in United States Opened in South Carolina

Over the weekend Estonian Ambassador to the United States Väino Reinart and Consul General in New York Jaanus Kirikmäe opened the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Charleston in the state of South Carolina. The Estonian honorary consul for the consular region of South Carolina is Harry Huge.

“Opening honorary consulates and expanding the network of honorary consuls helps to introduce Estonia in the United States and facilitates the creation and strengthening of contacts in the areas of economics, tourism and culture between Estonia and that particular state,” noted Reinart. “The honorary consuls also play an essential role is providing consular aid to Estonian citizens,” the ambassador added.

Honorary Consul Harry Huge was born on 16 September 1937 in Deshler, Nebraska. He was educated at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Huge holds an honorary doctorate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and belongs to the board of the university as well. He is also a member of the advisory board of the University of Maryland’s Robert Gallo Institute of Human Virology. Huge is a highly respected legal aid expert in the United States, having spent many years as a lawyer in the USA and other countries, working in both civil and criminal law. He is a member of the US National Bar Association and the bar associations of many states. Huge is also one of the legal advisors representing the families of victims of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City.

At the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s Harry Huge worked actively with the US administration and Congress to support the restoration of Estonia’s independence. In 2006 Huge was decorated with the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana. Huge and his wife Reba have established many foundations for funding the further education of American high school students. A student exchange programme and fund between Tartu University and Nebraska Wesleyan University was also established on the initiative of Harry Huge.

There are currently eight Estonian honorary consuls active in the United States. In addition to the honorary consul in Charleston, Honorary Consul Larry Ruth in Lincoln, Nebraska also assumed his post this year, and at the beginning of April another honorary consulate will be opened in Phoenix, Arizona.
