Foreign Minister Urmas Paet to Participate in Libya Discussion in London Today

No. 101-E

Today Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in a meeting of foreign ministers in London, where matters related to the crisis in Libya will be discussed. Foreign Minister Paet will also speak to his colleagues about the Estonian citizens who were abducted in Lebanon.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that it is important to support all the activities prescribed by UN Security Council Resolution 1973 in order to protect the residents of Libya. “Unfortunately armed conflicts are continuing in many areas, and there have been reports of new civilian victims. Violence against civilians must stop,” he added.

The foreign minister said that comprehensive co-operation among the UN, NATO, the EU, and regional organisations is necessary for resolving the Libya conflict. “We must decide on our future actions concerning Libya. Today in London the foreign ministers of NATO, the European Union, the region and other partner countries and the representatives of international organisations will be discussing the next steps that could be taken to resolve the Libya crisis,” said Paet.
