Estonia Prepared to Establish Diplomatic Relations with Somalia

06.04.2011

No. 114-E

During its session today, the government approved an order with the objective of establishing diplomatic relations between Estonia and Somalia.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that our goal is to establish diplomatic relations with as many countries in the world as possible. “This will help us to better protect our citizens and represent Estonia,” said Paet.

“Establishing diplomatic relations with Somalia right now is directly tied to Estonia’s participation in the European Union military operation ATALANTA for protecting the ships sailing near Somalia from pirate attacks,” said Paet. “Within the framework of ATALANTA, Estonia will send a Vessel Protection Detachment to ships sailing under the Somalian flag, which requires the approval of the Somalian government. Establishing diplomatic relations with Somalia will allow for communication with the Somalian government and therefore the full participation of the Estonian detachment in the ATALANTA operation,” he added.

Since 1991 Estonia has established diplomatic ties with a total of 168 countries. Most recently, diplomatic ties were established last year with Haiti and the Comoros.
