No. 144-E

During his stay in Abu Dhabi, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet spoke with his colleagues from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman about opportunities for developing relations between Estonia and these countries.

Paet said that Estonia will be naming an ambassador to all six of the Persian Gulf countries. “We would like to strengthen economic as well as political relations with all the countries in the Persian Gulf region,” he added.

According to the foreign minister, Estonia has made proposals to the six nations to conclude agreements for the protection of investments and the avoidance of double taxation. Yesterday Paet concluded the aforementioned agreement with the United Arab Emirates.

Paet stated that Estonia is also interested in facilitating the travel of Estonian citizens to Persian Gulf countries. “Kuwait and Oman issue visas to Estonian citizens at the border. I proposed to Bahrain and Qatar that their nations could also create the opportunity for Estonian citizens to get visas at the border,” he said.

Paet issued invitations to his colleagues to visit Estonia and to bring along representatives of business circles in their delegations.
Foreign Minister Urmas Paet was participating in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union and Persian Gulf member states.
