Estonia Hopes Croatian Accession Agreement with European Union Will Be Signed This Year

10.05.2011

No. 164-E

At his meeting today with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic in Istanbul, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that Estonia supports Croatia becoming a member of the European Union soon. Foreign Minister Jandrakovic thanked Estonia for its support in preparing Croatia for its European Union accession.

Foreign Minister Paet said that it is possible that Croatia’s accession negotiations will end and the final step of signing an accession agreement could be reached this year. “Estonia hopes to greet Croatia very soon as the 28th member of the European Union. For this to happen, Croatia needs to make a few final efforts in the area of the court system and fundamental rights,” he added.

Croatia has reached the end phase of its accession negotiations and has closed 30 chapters of negotiations.

Paet asserted that concluding European Union accession negotiations with Croatia would be a positive impetus for other Western Balkan countries to continue with reforms.
