Seminar for Wooden House Producers Took Place in Foreign Ministry

13.05.2011

No. 171-E

On Thursday, 12 May, a seminar on pre-built houses geared towards entrepreneurs and organised in co-operation with the Estonian Wooden Houses Association and the Estonian ECO Cluster took place in the Foreign Ministry.

The presentation of the Estonian Wooden Houses Association and the Estonian ECO Cluster highlighted the fact that in terms of sales revenue, Estonia ranks in 10th place in Europe for the production of wooden houses and 85% of what is produced is exported. A bottleneck is caused by the great dependence on the Norwegian market, since close to a third of the export currently goes to the Norwegian market. Wooden house producers would like to continue expanding to foreign markets.

In addition to Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, and Japan were also mentioned as markets that may be of interest to Estonian wooden house producers.

The situation and opportunities in Japan were addressed by Ambassador Toivo Tasa, who along with the Japanese representative of Enterprise Estonia has actively researched opportunities for Estonian businesses to participate in procurements organised by Japan for wooden house materials.

One of the primary obstacles for companies interested in exporting is a limited network of contacts abroad. The Foreign Ministry spoke about how it could potentially provide support to exporting businesses with its functioning network of representations (43) and honorary consuls (in 62 countries) as well as its business diplomacy support services.

The seminar on pre-built houses was the second information event aimed at a certain sector that has been organised by the Foreign Ministry this year. The previous event was geared towards the producers of foodstuffs and took place in February.
