In memoriam Ronald Asmus

On behalf of the Estonian Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet expressed condolences to the loved ones of Ronald Asmus. “Ronald Asmus made a great contribution to the exceptionally close ties between Estonia and the United States,” said Foreign Minister Paet. “The contribution made by Asmus in negotiations for the Baltic Charter and Estonia’s accession to NATO is invaluable,” he added.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that Ronald Asmus originated the idea and was the head negotiator for the US-Baltic Charter. “It was through this charter that the USA took on a clear leading role in guaranteeing the security and well-being of the Baltic states, and the charter became an irreplaceable tool for Estonia as it moved towards NATO membership as well,” he added.

“At the beginning of the 1990s Asmus was already supportive of NATO enlargement, and his firm and consistent support for Estonia played a large role in Estonia becoming a member of NATO in 2004,” the foreign minister said.
