Estonia Providing Aid to Victims of Armed Conflict in Libya

Nr 183-E

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that the humanitarian situation in Libya is extremely alarming and the international community must react in order to help those who have suffered as a result of the conflict in Libya. The Foreign Ministry is allocating 50 000 euros through the World Food Programme in order to improve the situation of the people of Libya.

“We are supporting the World Food Programme in providing food to victims of the Libya conflict and refugees both within Libya and in the country’s border areas,” said Paet. The foreign minister stated that if the conflict continues, the situation of people in the country and the border areas could worsen, since according to estimates the food supply in Libya will only last for another six to eight weeks.

“We must continue to place economic, political, and military pressure on the Gadhafi regime in order to end the violence against the people of Libya and improve the humanitarian situation,” emphasised Paet.
