Foreign Ministry Coming Events: 6 – 12 June 2011

6-7.06 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Budapest. Asia-Europe co-operation will be discussed. Other topics to be addressed are challenges in the security sector, matters related to recovery from the economic and financial crisis, and other important global developments. Foreign Minister Paet will be presenting a speech on cyber security. The foreign minister has bilateral meetings scheduled with the foreign ministers of Thailand and Mongolia. During their meeting, the Estonian and Latvian foreign ministers will sign a bilateral agreement on the reciprocal exchange and protection of classified information.

7-8.06 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) taking place in Oslo. The foreign ministers will discuss maritime affairs, human trafficking, the organisational capability of the CBSS, and matters related to the general development of the region. Foreign Minister Paet will give a speech at the meeting.

8.06 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in a conference in Oslo dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Norway and the Baltic states.

8.06 Foreign Ministry Secretary General Alar Streimann will meet with Spanish Secretary of State for the European Union Diego Lopez. They will discuss matters that are important to the European Union, such as the internal market, financial perspective, the co-ordination of economic policy, Neighbourhood Policy, enlargement, and immigration. Lopez also has meetings scheduled with Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for European Union Affairs Kaja Tael, chairman of the Riigikogu European Union affairs committee Taavi Rõivas, and Director for EU Affairs of the State Chancellery Juhan Lepassaar. The Spanish secretary of state will also visit the ICT Demo Centre.

9.-10.06 Director general of the Foreign Ministry’s 3rd political department Märt Volmer will participate in a public administration reform seminar organised by the Estonian Centre of Eastern Partnership taking place in Kiev. The seminar, which bears the title of “Public administration reform and negotiations within the context of Eastern Partnership,” is the third of its kind and is geared towards Eastern Partnership partner states.
The Estonian Centre of Eastern Partnership, in co-operation with the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine, the Estonian School of Diplomacy, the Estonian Foreign Ministry, and the Swedish development aid agency SIDA, is organising seminars under Platform 1 of European Union Eastern Partnership for the diplomats and state officials of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Belarus.

9-10.06 Consultations between the foreign ministries of Estonia and Ukraine will take place in Kiev. The Estonian delegation will be led by director general of the Foreign Ministry’s 3rd political department Märt Volmer. Ukraine-European Union relations and preparations for the Eastern Partnership summit will be discussed at the consultations. In addition, Estonia-Ukraine bilateral relations, the situation in neighbouring countries, and co-operation in international organisations will also be discussed.
