Estonia Supports Visa Dialogue Between Kosovo and European Union

07.10.2011

No. 321-E

Today Foreign Minister Urmas Paet met with the first ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Estonia Ilir Dogolli. At their meeting, the two discussed Estonia-Kosovo bilateral relations as well as relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that based on its own experiences Estonia can advise Kosovo first and foremost in the information and communications technology sector, since we have skills and know-how in establishing various e-solutions. “Kosovo must get democratic institutions up and running and implement the principles of rule of law. Effective IT solutions definitely play a part in this process. In addition, Estonia continues to support the EU visa dialogue and the start of free trade agreement negotiations with Kosovo. The same goes for the conclusion of a framework agreement, which would allow Kosovo to participate in European Union programmes,” Paet added.

In talking about relations between Kosovo and Serbia, Foreign Minister Paet emphasised that it is essential for the dialogue that was started in March between Belgrade and Pristina to continue. “This is the only possible path to resolving the disputes between them. The dialogue, which has so far gone well, has shown that if both sides are willing and ready to co-operate, it is possible to achieve results. In order to avoid the future escalation of tensions in North Kosovo, an effort must be made by both Serbia and Kosovo,” he added.

Ambassador Ilir Dogolli resides in Brussels.
