Foreign Ministry Coming Events: 24 – 30 October 2011

24-28.10 Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Legal and Consular Affairs Lauri Bambus will participate in the International Law Week taking place at the UN. On 26 October Bambus will give a speech at the presentation of the annual report of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

A resolution approved by the UN General Assembly in 2003 named the first week during which the legal counsellors of member states discussed the International Law Committee’s report within the Sixth Committee “International Law Week”. The format allows for meetings to take place and contacts to be created among different states’ legal counsellors, the discussion of various international law topics in formal and informal consultations, and the introduction of states’ candidates to international courts and other bodies.

25-26.10 Foreign Ministry Secretary General Alar Streimann will participate in the meeting of the secretaries general of the foreign ministries of the Nordic and Baltic countries (Nordic-Baltic 8 or NB8). Topics to be discussed at the meeting are matters related to implementing proposals mentioned in the Nordic-Baltic Co-operation Report, as well as relations with China, Turkey and Russia and co-operation with the United States.

25.10 The 36th UNESCO General Conference will begin in Paris, where the Estonian delegation will be led by Estonian Ambassador to UNESCO Marten Kokk. The delegation is made up of representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education and Research, Foreign Ministry, and the Estonian National Commission for UNESCO. On 31 October Ambassador Kokk will present a speech during a plenary session of the General Conference.

25.10 Director general of the Foreign Ministry’s consular department Rasmus Lumi will participate in a meeting of consular directors of the Baltic and Benelux countries taking place in The Hague. At the meeting the directors will discuss opportunities to intensify co-operation in consular affairs and the adding of a consular co-operation function to the European External Action Service.

25-26.10 Director general of the Foreign Ministry’s external economic and development co-operation department Andre Pung will participate in an informal meeting of the directors general of European Union development co-operation in Brussels.

26.10 Director general of the Foreign Ministry’s consular department Rasmus Lumi and Director General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Ahmet Üzümcü will sign a Privileges and Immunities Agreement between Estonia and the OPCW in The Hague.

27.10 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in the Helsinki Book Fair and in the evening will give a speech at the reception being held at the Estonian Embassy for the people who helped organise the book fair. Estonia was chosen to be the theme country for the Helsinki Book Fair taking place from 27-30 October.

Estonia’s booth at the Helsinki Book Fair this year is an eye-catching and unique black cube where books will be displayed and presentations, meet-ups, and other exciting events will take place. Estonia’s exhibition and programme were compiled and carried out by the Ministry of Culture, the Estonian Writers’ Union, the Estonian Publishers’ Association, and the Estonian Literature Centre. 27.10 Estonian Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Jaan Hein will present his credentials. He is Estonia’s first ambassador to Kyrgyzstan.

27-28.10 Consular consultations between the Baltic States will take place in Estonia; representatives of the Nordic countries will also participate. The Estonian delegation will be led by director general of the Foreign Ministry’s consular department Rasmus Lumi. Within the course of the consultations essential consular information will be exchanged and opportunities to intensify co-operation for offering consular aid will be discussed.

28.10 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will give a speech at the XXV High National Defence Course taking place from 23-28 October in Roosta.
