10.11.2011

No. 352-E

On Wednesday, 9 November, Estonian Ambassador to the United States Marina Kaljurand and Consul General in New York Sten Schwede opened the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Atlanta, Georgia. The Estonian honorary consul for the consular area of Georgia is Aadu Allpere. There are 70 countries from around the world with official representations in the state of Georgia.

At the opening of the honorary consulate, Ambassador Marina Kaljurand emphasised that for a small country like Estonia honorary consuls are invaluable for helping to develop economic and cultural ties with other countries and creating contacts between people. The ambassador thanked Aadu Allpere for his dedication to introducing Estonia in America and expressed satisfaction over the fact that Estonia’s network of honorary consuls is being joined by such a valuable member.

Allpere said that he has spent his entire adulthood trying to increase awareness of Estonia and promote relations with Estonia after it regained its independence. Since Atlanta is the economic centre of the south-eastern United States, Allpere feels there are good opportunities for co-operation with Estonia. Allpere believes the greatest potential is in the IT, biotechnology, defence industry, and logistics sectors.

Honorary Consul Aadu Allpere was born in Tallinn on 8 May 1940 and moved to the United States when he was nine years old. Allpere studied business administration and trade at the University of Pennsylvania and has worked for 30 years in various positions at the Coca-Cola Corporation, also serving as the president of the branches in Austria and five Eastern European countries. Currently he manages a health centre specialising in foot care. The Estonian honorary consul in Atlanta has been very active in the community as a member of many organisations like the Rotary Club, the Atlanta Council on International Relations and other international societies, and also the Estonian Students’ Society. Aadu Allpere is married and has two sons. He speaks Estonian, English and German.

The Georgia honorary consulate is located at Suite 100, 1865 High Trail, Atlanta, GA, 30339. The honorary consul can be reached by phone at(1 404) 806 7757 or by email at aadu.allpere@mfa.ee.
