Estonia Opens Tenth Honorary Consulate in USA in New Orleans

No. 355-E

Estonia can now boast ten honorary consulates in the United States, after Estonian Ambassador to the United States Marina Kaljurand and Consul General in New York Sten Schwede opened the newest honorary consulate in New Orleans, Louisiana on Friday, 11 November. The Estonian honorary consul in the area is Gerard P. McGovern. Mayor of New Orleans Mitch Landrieu also participated in the opening of the honorary consulate.

Gerard McGovern was born on 8 November 1957 in New Orleans. He earned a degree in economics and finance from Loyola University and began his career in the art world, managing the sale of his brother’s works. Following that McGovern entered the real estate business, where he worked for a few decades. The Estonian honorary consul in New Orleans has also been active in the local Rotary Club and World Trade Centre. He has visited Estonia many times and feels he is very familiar with developments in Estonia. The honorary consul stated that it is a great honour to represent a nation as successful as Estonia in one of the southernmost states in America.
Ambassador Marina Kaljurand expressed hope that the opening of the honorary consulate would enliven cultural ties and tourism between Estonia and the state of Louisiana. She also emphasised that New Orleans, situated by the Gulf of Mexico and the mouth of the Mississippi River, is the only deep-water port in the US and therefore offers good opportunities for advancing trade relations with Estonia.

The new honorary consulate is located at 2718 State Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70118 USA. The honorary consul can be reached by phone at (504) 994-6611 or by email at
