Estonian Ambassador to Canada Presents Credentials


On 1 December, Estonian Ambassador to Canada Marina Kaljurand presented her credentials to Governor General of Canada David Johnston. The Estonian ambassador resides in Washington. The Estonia Embassy in Ottawa is headed by Chargé d’Affaires Riho Kruuv.

In his opening speech, Governor General Johnston emphasised that Canada was one of the first countries to recognise Estonia’s restored independence 20 years ago and expressed his happiness over the anniversary of restoring diplomatic relations. In his speech he also recognised the large Estonian community in Canada, which has enriched the cultural landscape of Canada a great deal. Governor General Johnston also expressed satisfaction over Estonia and Canada’s good co-operation in international organisations such as NATO and the UN and said he hopes that ties between the two countries grow even closer in the future.

In their discussion following the presenting of credentials, Ambassador Kaljurand introduced the governor general to Estonia’s accomplishments in using information technology to provide public services to citizens and called on Canada to join the NATO Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn. During the discussion, both sides acknowledged great potential in the realm of student and youth exchange between Canada and Estonia.
Marina Kaljurand started her diplomatic service in 1991 by joining the press and information department of the Foreign Ministry. From 1992 to 1996, Kaljurand worked as the director of the international treaties office of the Foreign Ministry’s legal department and from 1996 to 1999 she was a counsellor to the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki. From 1999 to 2001, Kaljurand worked as the director general of the legal department and from 2001 to 2005 as the undersecretary for legal and consular affairs. From 2004 to 2006 Kaljurand served as the Estonian ambassador to Israel residing in Tallinn, and from 2005 to 2008 she was the Estonian ambassador to Russia. As of 2008 Kaljurand worked as the undersecretary for external economic and development affairs and served as the ambassador to Kazakhstan residing in Tallinn. Currently Marina Kaljurand is the Estonian ambassador to the United States and Mexico.

Marina Kaljurand is married and has a son and daughter. She speaks English, Russian and Finnish.
