Chief Prosecutors of International Criminal Court to Visit Estonia

From 7-8 February the current chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Luis Moreno-Ocampo and Fatou Bensouda, who will soon take over the role of chief prosecutor, will be in Estonia for a visit.

The ICC prosecutors have meetings scheduled with Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, Justice Minister Kristen Michal, chairman of the Riigikogu constitutional committee Rait Maruste, and chairman of the Estonian Institute of Human Rights Mart Nutt.

Topics to be discussed at the meetings are the ICC’s role in the world as well as opportunities and challenges in preventing gross human rights violations and prosecuting those who have committed crimes.

On 8 February at 10.00 current chief prosecutor of the ICC Luis Moreno-Ocampo and incoming chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will give a public lecture in the main auditorium (I-202) of the Tallinn University of Technology entitled “International Criminal Court as a prominent actor in international order: Its prospects and challenges”.

An Estonian perspective on the court’s activities will be given by president of the ICC Assembly of States Parties Tiina Intelmann, chairman of the Riigikogu constitutional committee Rait Maruste, and chairman of the Estonian Institute of Human Rights Mart Nutt.

The lecture is taking place through the co-operation of the Foreign Ministry, Institute of Human Rights, and Tallinn University of Technology.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, president of the ICC Assembly of States Parties Tiina Intelmann, current chief prosecutor of the ICC Luis Moreno-Ocampo, and incoming chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will give a joint press conference in the Foreign Ministry press centre at 15.00 on Tuesday, 7 February.
