Estonia Wants Serbia to Be European Union Candidate Country

29.02.2012

No. 47–E

At his meeting in Geneva with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić today, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet expressed his satisfaction over the European Union General Council’s decision to make a proposal to give European Union candidate country status to Serbia. “We value Serbia’s efforts up to this point and we hope that the European Union’s decision will give a positive impulse for you to continue making necessary reforms,” said Paet.

The foreign minister stated that the European Union also recognises Serbia’s efforts in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue to reach an agreement regarding Kosovo’s participation in regional co-operation. “Dialogue is the best way to resolve differences,” Paet noted. The foreign minister added that in view of the stability of the Western Balkan region, it is essential that a European Union perspective be confirmed for Kosovo as well.

In talking about Estonia and Serbia’s bilateral relations, the foreign minister said that Estonia is interested in intensifying economic ties with Serbia.
