Works of Estonian Fashion Illustrators to Be Shown in Helsinki Design Museum

14.03.2012

No. 20-TT

Tomorrow, 15 March, the international exhibit “New Nordic Fashion Illustration” will be opened in the Helsinki Design Museum. The same exhibit was displayed in Tallinn last year within the framework of the Capital of Culture year. In addition to the works of well-known Finnish and Swedish fashion illustrators, Estonian works are also included in the display.

“Helsinki is the World Design Capital this year, and the programme for this major event includes the Helsinki Design Museum’s project ‘Design Gallery 12’. Over 100 exhibits applied last year to be a part of the project, of which the 12 best were chosen by the museum. The exhibit we designed, ‘New Nordic Fashion Illustration’, was chosen as one of the best exhibits,” said exhibit co-ordinator Helen Saluveer.

“We are thrilled that the Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 programme includes many projects that involve Estonian designers. The good co-operation between last year’s Capitals of Culture demonstrated that working together makes us greater. The exhibit of Nordic fashion illustrations, which was created from the works of Estonian, Finnish and Swedish designers, being shown at the Finnish design museum is a great example of this co-operation,” confirmed Liisa Ojaveer of the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki.

The international exhibit “New Nordic Fashion Illustration” displays the works of Anu Samarüütel-Long, Marju Tammik, Kätlin Kaljuvee and Leana Salvet of Estonia, Minni Havas and Laura Laine of Finland, and Cecilia Carlstedt and Lovisa Burfitt of Sweden. All the fashion illustrators are highly respected in their field and some of their works have been ordered by world-famous fashion brands and magazines. The fashion illustrators have created some new works just for the Helsinki exhibit. The creative director of the exhibit is Toomas Volkmann and the graphic designer is Tuuli Aule.

The exhibit of fashion illustrations, which belonged to the programme of the Capital of Culture Year 2011 and was displayed as part of Tallinn Fashion Week in the Rotermann Quarter last summer, proved to be very popular. The exhibit was visited by over 3500 people and was covered by many media outlets.

The exhibit is receiving support from its partners the Helsinki Design Museum, Estonian Embassy in Helsinki, Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Council of Gambling Tax, the Finnish Institute, Järsi OÜ, and the NPO Estonian Fashion Council.

The exhibit “New Nordic Fashion Illustration” will be open in the Helsinki Design Museum from 16 March until 8 April 2012.
