Estonian Ambassador to Afghanistan Presents Credentials

Today, 3 April, Estonia’s new ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Väino Reinart presented his credentials to President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai.

Estonian Ambassador Väino Reinart and Afghan President Hamid Karzai discussed opportunities for co-operation in stabilising the nation. They also spoke about Estonia’s opportunities to help with the development of Afghanistan. Ambassador Reinart stated that Afghanistan is still one of Estonia’s priorities for both civil and military aid. “In development co-operation we focus on health care, education, and promoting good administrative practices,” he added. At the meeting the two also talked about Estonia’s history and language.

Ambassador Reinart also had meetings in Kabul with representatives of the Afghan government, European Union Special Representative Vygaudas Usackas, Chief of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Jan Kubis, Deputy Director of EUPOL Geoffrey Cooper, and NATO Senior Civil Representative in Afghanistan Simon Gass. The Estonian ambassador also met with the rector of Kabul University, Professor Hamedullah Amini.

Estonia opened its special diplomatic mission in Afghanistan in 2006. Currently the Estonian chargé d’affaires in Afghanistan is Vahur Soosaar. Ambassador Väino Reinart resides in Tallinn. Reinart is also Estonia’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Ambassador Väino Reinart was born on 28 December 1962 in Kuressaare. He graduated from the control engineering department of Tallinn University of Technology, was a post-graduate student of physics in the Estonian Academy of Sciences’ Chemical and Biological Physics Institute, and completed the arms control and security policy course at the Geneva Graduate Institute of International Studies. Reinart has worked at the Estonian Foreign Ministry since 1992, serving as the Estonian delegation leader for negotiations with Russia, director of the political department, and permanent representative of Estonia to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). As of 2002 Reinart became the Estonian ambassador to the European Union. In August 2007 Väino Reinart became the Estonian ambassador to the United States and Mexico, and as of May 2008 also the ambassador to Canada. Currently Reinart is working as the Foreign Ministry undersecretary for economic and development affairs.
