Estonia formally joins the Open Governance Partnership

18.04.2012

At the annual meeting of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in Brazil, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said yesterday that Estonia is joining an initiative that has the objective of supporting democracy, the principles of the rule of law, economic development and collaboration with NGOs.

“Our aim in participating in the Open Governance Partnership is to introduce Estonia’s successful e-solutions and contribute to the promotion of democracy worldwide,” said Paet. “It is also important for the basic principles of democracy to spread in countries that are not presently ruled democratically,” he added.

According to Paet, Estonia also uses information technology solutions for open governance. “Open and transparent decision making and the provision of high quality and easily accessible public services all support open governance in Estonia,” stated Paet. “Even so, we want to increase the range of opportunities for public engagement. Therefore, our country’s action plan includes the goals of boosting public involvement and the better assessment of the impact that decisions have,” he added.

The President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, and the U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, also attended the annual meeting of the Open Governance Partnership in Brazil as representatives of their respective countries.

The Open Governance Partnership is an international initiative launched in 2011 by Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States. The objective of the initiative is to promote citizen-focused governance using information and communication technology solutions.

The annual meeting of the Open Governance Partnership held on 17-18 April has been attended by 50 countries of which 42 will present their own respective action plan.

The Estonian government approved the Estonian open governance partnership action plan last Wednesday.
