Foreign Minister Urmas Paet on behalf of 15 European Union countries: the devices of EU’s cohesion policy must not be reduced any further

No 305-E

Speaking on behalf of the 15 member states of the Friends of Cohesion Policy group at today’s meeting of European Union’s foreign and EU affairs ministers in Cyprus, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet underlined that the next financial framework must not reduce the devices of policies that directly endorse growth, employment and competitiveness. “The devices of EU’s cohesion policy cannot be reduced any further,” Paet said.
According to Foreign Minister Paet, further cuts in the field contradict the decisions made at the June summit of the Council of Europe. “The instruments of the cohesion policy are specifically aimed at boosting growth, employment and competitiveness and reducing them would slow down growth,” he said.

The Foreign Minister also added that the states belonging to the Friends of Cohesion Policy wish to reach an agreement on the budget framework before the end of the year.

In addition to Estonia, the Friends of Cohesion Policy includes Spain, Portugal, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Latvia and Malta.
