05.09.2012

No 310-E

On Tuesday, 4 September, Estonia’s new ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany Kaja Tael presented her credentials to Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany Joachim Gauck.

In the discussion that followed the presentation of credentials, President Gauck and Ambassador Tael discussed Estonia-Germany bilateral relations. President Gauck emphasised repeatedly that he is certain that Estonia serves as an example for Europe in many ways. Estonia has made it through some tough times with its determination and its citizens have continued to support the decisions of the government. Like in many other Eastern European countries, the people in Estonia value the future prospects of the European Union. President Gauck stated that it is important for this hopeful attitude to spread to all of Europe. Estonia and Germany are currently very close and have found a common language. President Gauck would be happy to visit Estonia himself if the opportunity arises, as he has heard so much about both its history and its current situation.

Ambassador Kaja Tael was born on 24 July 1960 in Tallinn. She graduated from Tartu University with a degree in Estonian philology in 1983 and in 1989 earned her PhD in Estonian philology. From 1991-1995 Kaja Tael was the director of the Estonian Institute. From 1995-1998 Kaja Tael worked as a counsellor to President Lennart Meri. In 1998 Tael began working in the Foreign Ministry, where she has held many positions. From 2001-2006 Kaja Tael was the Estonian ambassador to Great Britain and Northern Island in the United Kingdom. From 2006 until now Kaja Tael was serving as the Foreign Ministry undersecretary for European Union affairs.
