02.10.2012

Nr 346-E

At his meeting in New York with Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet signed an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation between Estonia and Uzbekistan. “We would like to conclude an agreement for the facilitation and protection of investments with Uzbekistan in the near future,” Paet noted. He added that Estonia is also interested in concluding an international transport agreement with Uzbekistan.
Paet stated that the development of bilateral relations has been helped by the appointment of an Estonian ambassador to Uzbekistan in 2011.

Paet said that Estonia is expecting a delegation from Uzbekistan in Tallinn in 2013 for political consultations. “We are interested in appointing an honorary consul to Uzbekistan,” he added.

The foreign ministers spoke about Estonia’s reform experiences. “We are prepared to share our experiences with reforming our social security and the pension system with Uzbekistan, as well as our experiences with public sector and economic reforms,” Paet stated. “We are interested in co-operating with higher education institutions in Uzbekistan and are prepared to share our experiences in the field of vocational education.” Paet added that other potential areas for co-operation are agriculture and environmental protection, for example nature preservation and waste management.

Paet also met in New York with representatives of the American Jewish Committee. At their meeting they discussed the Middle East peace process, Estonia-Israel relations, and the activities of the Estonian Jewish community.
