Foreign Minister Urmas Paet Spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov About Upcoming Consultations Between Foreign Ministries

15.10.2012

Nr 364-E

Last night in Luxembourg Foreign Minister Urmas Paet spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about carrying out consultations between the Estonian and Russian foreign ministries with the goal of finding an opportunity to implement the border treaty based on the proposals made to the government by the factions and foreign affairs committee of the Riigikogu.

Both Paet and Lavrov expressed their readiness to begin consultations within the next few weeks.

Both sides also confirmed that it is not necessary to address the placement of the border line during the talks since that was established in 2005 after close to 11 years of negotiations.

Paet stated that the consultations between the foreign ministries will focus on finding a common political framework that would allow the border treaty to come into force.

Last night Foreign Minister Urmas Paet participated in a meeting of the European Union and Russian foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
