Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: Israel-Gaza Conflict Must Stop Immediately

No 411-E

At a meeting of the European Union foreign ministers in Brussels today, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that the international community must do everything in its power to end the Israel-Gaza conflict.

“We must prevent the loss of any more civilian lives,” he stated. Paet said that Estonia and the European Union strongly condemn the missile attacks from Gaza towards Israel. “Israel has the right to protect itself. At the same times, civilian lives must be protected and both sides must respect international humanitarian law,” he added.

The Estonian foreign minister noted that the escalation of the situation in Gaza is extremely dangerous and the consequences are unpredictable in terms of both Israel-Palestine bilateral relations as well as within the context of the region as a whole. “The current situation emphasises how important it is to move towards a two-state solution so that both sides could live in a safe environment,” stated Paet.
