Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: Direct Negotiations Between Israel and Palestine Are Only Way to Peace

11.12.2012

No 447-E

The European Union must help to re-start negotiations between Israel and Palestine, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said during a meeting of the European Union foreign ministers in Brussels.

“Resuming  negotiations without any stipulations between Israel and Palestine is essential,” said Paet. “The activities of the European Union must be geared towards helping to re-start negotiations,” he stated.

The Estonian foreign minister said that a political solution is the only possibility for reaching a two-state situation and that both sides should focus on avoiding steps that could make it even more complicated to move forward with the peace process. “The peace process is not helped by settlement activity or by firing missiles from Gaza into Israel’s territory,” he added.

“We hope that the cease-fire that was concluded between Israel and Gaza on 21 November will remain in effect,” said Paet.
