Estonian Ambassador to Singapore Presents Credentials

On Monday, 27 May, Estonian Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore Andres Unga presented his credentials to President of Singapore Tony Tan. The Estonian ambassador resides in Tallinn.

In the discussion that followed the presentation of credentials, Ambassador Andres Unga and President of Singapore Tony Tan discussed bilateral relations and recent developments in both countries’ neighbourhoods. “High-level visits, on the level of both governments and parliaments, would help to enliven bilateral relations,” Ambassador Unga stated.

Ambassador Unga and President Tan also spoke about promoting tourism relations and co-operation in the IT realm between Estonia and Singapore. The president of Singapore expressed interest in Estonia’s experiences in the e-governance sector.

They also discussed relations between the European Union and Singapore. Ambassador Unga expressed hope that rapid progress would be made on the free trade agreement between the EU and Singapore so that it could come into effect. “The agreement should give new perspectives and boost competitiveness for representatives of both countries’ business communities. Estonia is interested in better access to Singapore’s services market, for example in the information technology and e-services sector, as well as in the logistics and transport and financial services sectors,” added Ambassador Unga.

During the meeting, Ambassador Unga passed along greetings from President Toomas Hendrik Ilves along with an invitation to visit Estonia, to which the president of Singapore responded in kind.
Andres Unga was born on 29 April 1966 in Viljandi. He graduated from Tallinn University of Technology and the Estonian School of Diplomacy in 1991. After graduating from university, Unga went to work in the protocol department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and stayed in that department until 1996 as a deputy director, director and then director general. From 1996 to 2000, Unga was the ambassador to Sweden, and after that he worked as the director general of the Ministry’s human resources department. From 2003-2007 Andres Unga was the ambassador to Greece. From 2004-2007 he was the non-residing Estonian ambassador to Cyprus and from 2003-2008 he was the non-residing ambassador to Armenia. Unga was the ambassador to China from 2007-2012. From 2008-2012 he was also the non-residing ambassador to Vietnam and from 2010-2012 the non-residing ambassador to South Korea.
As of 2009 Ambassador Unga has been the non-residing ambassador to Thailand. Since the beginning of this year he has been the non-residing ambassador to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. President Toomas Hendrik Ilves has also appointed Andres Unga the non-residing ambassador to Malaysia.

Ambassador Andres Unga is married and has two children. Unga speaks English, Russian and Swedish.
