Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: Estonia Would Like to Reach Agreement with European Parliament to Approve Next EU Budget

No 217-E

“The member states of the European Union have reached an agreement regarding the multiannual budgetary framework for the years 2014-2020, and we hope that the European Parliament will confirm its readiness to put it to a vote during the July session,” Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said at the European Union General Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

Estonia supports the packet presented to the European Parliament by the current EU Presidency Ireland, which takes the wishes of the Parliament into consideration as much as possible. “After many months of discussion among the presidency, the Parliament and the European Commission, we are many steps closer to meeting the Parliament’s requirements,” Paet explained.

Paet stated that, in accordance with the Parliament’s wishes, the new budget is now more flexible than in the last period and the Parliament can participate in reviewing and changing the budget.
