Estonia Considers the Use of a Chemical Weapon in Syria Unacceptable

29.08.2013

According to Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, Estonia categorically condemns the use of a chemical weapon in Syria. “The use of a chemical weapon against civilians, regardless of the circumstances, is shameful and completely unacceptable,” he said.

Estonia considers it necessary to conduct an extensive and impartial investigation of the use of a chemical weapon in Syria. “At the moment, there is a delegation of UN experts in Syria who are examining claims regarding previous uses of chemical weapons. Those same experts should urgently examine this incident as well,” said the Estonian foreign minister.

Paet says it is very important for Syria to join the Chemical Weapons Convention without delay. “This would provide a legal instrument to investigate such incidents and immediately destroy the chemical weapons,” he added.
