Estonia Considers UN Security Council Resolution on Destruction of Syria’s Chemical Weapons to Be Necessary

18.09.2013

Nr 289-E

According to Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, Estonia considers prompt and successful implementation of the agreement to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons to be important. “To implement the agreement, it is necessary to have a strict UN Security Council resolution which also addresses the question of non-compliance,” noted Paet.

Syria has agreed to disclose the locations of its chemical weapons within the week and eliminate its chemical weapons arsenal by mid-2014. “The resolution is necessary to ensure that the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons goes without hindrance,” stressed the Estonian foreign minister.

“The use of a chemical weapon is a serious violation of international law and the perpetrators must be punished in accordance with international law,” said Paet. “The International Criminal Court must prosecute them,” he stressed.
