Exhibition Introducing Contemporary Estonian Architecture Opened in London

On 15 October, a photo exhibition entitled “Conversion in Estonian Contemporary Architecture” was opened in the Star Gallery of the European House in London. The exhibition provides an opportunity to get an overview of the last decade’s most exciting and internationally recognized examples of Estonian architecture.

According to the curator, Andrus Kõresaar, the photo exhibition expressed that which Estonian architects consider to be important in urban development. “The story of every selected object is told through the displays, and the exhibit itself explains how to create new urban environments with architecture that has a modern character, all the while without forgetting the past,” said Kõresaar, introducing the exhibition’s conception in more detail.

According to the The Embassy of Estonia in London’s cultural counsellor Kristel Oitmaa, it is important to introduce Estonia’s unique contemporary architecture more broadly in the world. “Estonian architects are certainly internationally competitive and we want to introduce their work to the United Kingdom’s professionals and those interested in architecture more broadly,” added Oitmaa.

Among other things, the exhibition displays the Fahle House, which was among the final design selections of the 2011 London Museum of Design, and the Estonian Maritime Museum’s Seaplane Harbour, which was awarded this year’s Europa Nostra and European Union main prize.

The exhibition has been assembled and curated by KOKO architects and was accomplished through collaboration between the Embassy of Estonia in London, the Estonian Ministry of Culture, and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

Over 80 people participated in yesterday’s opening event, and the exhibition is open to visitors in the Star Gallery from 16 October to 25 October.
