Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian Translators’ Competition Opened

Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet and Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs are announcing, for the fifth time, a competition for the Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translation award. The winner of the competition will be decided in the spring of 2014.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet expressed contentment that the translation award initiative has developed into a joint tradition that connects the Estonian and Latvian cultural space. “By giving out the award, we hope to inspire the translation of Estonian-language works into Latvian and vice versa as well as give recognition to those individuals who best translate into the Latvian and Estonian languages,” said Paet.

According to Foreign Minister Paet, the translation award stresses the importance of the Estonian and Latvian languages and cultural exchange between the two, in order to promote the expertise of those professionals that translate literary, political, popular science, historical, sociological, and other types of works.

The monetary value of the award is 3000 Euros and the Estonian and Latvian ministries of foreign affairs will contribute equally to it. The panel will include representatives of both foreign ministries as well as literary experts.

Candidates of the translation competition for specific works and translation activities in 2013 can be submitted through the application form on the Foreign Ministry’s webpage ( and by including the translator’s CV. The deadline for the application is 2 February 2014.

In previous years, the awards have been presented to translators Maima Grīnberga (2009, 2012), Guntars Godinš (2010) and Kalev Kalkun (2011).

The agreement to create the Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translation award was signed by Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet and Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Māris Riekstiņš on 18 February 2009. The idea for establishing the award was conceived by the Ambassador of Estonia to Latvia Jaak Jõerüüt and Ambassador of Latvia to Estonia Kārlis Eihenbaums, who presented a joint letter to implement the initiative to the foreign ministers of both countries at the end of 2008.
