16.01.2014

No. 8-E

At a meeting in Tallinn today with the chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, David Usupashvili, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet confirmed Estonia’s support for a visa-free regime and free trade between the European Union and Georgia.

Paet stressed that Estonia’s goal is entry into an association and free trade agreement between the European Union and Georgia as quickly as possible, but no later than in August of this year. “We are ready to support Georgia in implementing the reforms required for the signing and later performance of the agreement. To this end, the Estonian Center of Eastern Partnership, which through training and refresher courses of officials contributes to the implementation of reforms in eastern partnership countries, presents a good opportunity,” Paet said. “Achieving a visa-free regime is also important in facilitating a continued convergence of Georgia with the European Union through interpersonal contacts,” added Paet.

According to Paet, Georgia is still one of the priority countries for Estonia in terms of development cooperation. For Estonia, the main areas of development cooperation in Georgia have been contributing to the development of civil society, vocational and higher education, business and good governance practice.

Paet also expressed support for Georgia’s integration with NATO. “What is important here is Georgia’s continued intention to implement changes and development,” added Paet.

Foreign Minister Paet and the chairman of Parliament of Georgia, David Usupashvili, expressed their satisfaction with active bilateral relations between Estonia and Georgia that the regular high level visits and close cooperation in the area of culture show. “We hope that the cooperation agreement on tourism that took effect in December will enhance cooperation in the area of tourism even more,” Paet said.
