Foreign minister Urmas Paet expressed support for the integrity of Ukraine at his meeting with Ukraine's Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister

While meeting at the UN headquarters in New York with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and foreign minister Andrii Deshchytsya, foreign minister Urmas Paet said that Estonia supports the Ukrainian government's commitment to peacefully resolve the conflict with Russia on the basis of Ukraine's integrity.

"The European Union must help Ukraine come out of the crisis and put pressure on Russia to stop the conflict. We also support the prompt signing of the EU’s Association Agreement with Ukraine,” Paet said. He added, that on Monday in Brussels the EU foreign ministers will once again discuss supporting Ukraine and imposing restrictive measures against Russia.

Prime Minister Yatsenyuk said the international community's contribution to halting pressure by Russia in Ukraine is vital. Foreign minister Deshchytsya expressed hope at the meeting, that the Association Agreement with the European Union will be signed shortly.

According to Paet, Estonia is ready to support Ukraine in stabilizing its internal situation and in carrying out reforms to rebuild a strong state based on the rule of law. Paet confirmed that Estonia and the foreign ministers of the other EU countries have expressed clear support for an international assistance package, that would be able to alleviate Ukraine’s immediate needs.
Estonia does not recognize the referendum on accession to Russia to be held in Crimea on Sunday, since it is contrary to the Constitution of Ukraine and is to be carried out in a situation where the troops of another country, in this case Russian forces, are present in the region. "We must also demand the annulment of the decision of the Russian parliament, which allows the use of its military in Ukraine," he added.

Paet stated that the prompt deployment of an OSCE monitoring mission to Ukraine and its permanent presence there are also necessary.
