Estonia welcomes the new NATO Secretary General

Foreign minister Urmas Paet said that the former Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg has demonstrated strong support for transatlantic cooperation and collective defence principles during his long term of office. “The events in Ukraine have rapidly changed the security situation in the whole of Europe,” foreign minister Paet said. “Consequently, cooperation among allies in NATO is even more essential. I believe that future Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will successfully lead NATO through the most difficult times, thanks to his long-term political experience,” he added.

Paet also expressed his gratitude to current Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen for what he has done and pointed out, that this year's NATO summit in September in Wales will be held at a very important time. “NATO should reconsider its current priorities and focus on transatlantic cooperation,” foreign minister Paet said.

Jens Stoltenberg will take office on 1 October 2014. He has twice been Prime Minister of Norway.
