Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: the NATO Secretary General is visiting Estonia at a time when existing European security principles are changing

08.05.2014

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet welcomed NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen at the Tallinn Airport today upon the start of his visit to Estonia. “The NATO Secretary General is visiting Estonia at a time when existing European security principles are changing significantly, unfortunately not in a positive direction,” Foreign Minister Paet said. “In this situation, the role of NATO as the main security organisation is becoming even more important,” he added.

According to Paet, Estonia highly appreciates the opportunity to consult with the Secretary General on the security issues NATO is facing. “The Secretary General's visit to Estonia also allows for the introduction of the steps NATO has taken to strengthen the security of its allies and also to introduce what Estonia has consistently been doing to strengthen its security, as well as that of the alliance,” Paet said.

Paet noted that it is important that in addition to the Secretary General, the ambassadors of the North Atlantic Council are also visiting Estonia. “What they see here and the meetings taking place will help the alliance to make the important decisions it is facing,” he said. “The security of NATO, including our region and Estonia, is secured. The visit of the Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council is a confirmation of this,” the minister added.

Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen will be visiting Estonia on May 8 and 9 in order to speak with Estonian leaders about the changed security situation in Europe. On May 8, Rasmussen will meet with President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas and Foreign Minister Urmas Paet. On Friday May 9, Rasmussen will give a public lecture at Tallinn University in cooperation with the Estonian Atlantic Treaty Association and visit Ämari Air Base with Foreign Minister Urmas Paet.
