Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: Estonia and Norway are intensifying security cooperation

21.05.2014

At today's meeting in Oslo with Norwegian Foreign Minister Børge Brende, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Estonia considers Norway's contribution to Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian air policing to be of great importance.

"Norway could consider further air policing from Ämari Air Base as well, which is now in use as a NATO Baltic Air Policing mission base," Paet said. He added that an important example of Norway's contribution is their decision to send a flagship and minesweeper to be part of the NATO Response Force.

Paet suggested that Norway could join the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre in Tallinn. "The Allies' preparedness in the fight against cyber threats is very important," he added.

Paet stated that Estonia is delighted that former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, who has a good understanding of security issues in our region, will become the new Secretary General of NATO as of October 1.

At their meeting, the foreign ministers also talked about economic relations between Estonia and Norway. "The growth of trade and rise of Norwegian investments in Estonia are very positive," Paet said, adding that Norway is an important export destination for Estonia. In 2013, Norway was Estonia's seventh biggest export partner and exports totaled 447.5 million euros.

According to the Estonian Foreign Minister, the connecting of Nordic and Baltic countries via energy-, transportation- and e-connections is currently one of the most important regional issues. "In addition to increasing the region's competitiveness and economic well-being, these steps are necessary to ensure the security of the region," Paet emphasized.

Paet said that Estonia is also cooperating with Norway in preparing to apply for observer status in the Arctic Council.

Paet invited his Norwegian colleague to come visit Estonia.
