Foreign Minister Paet: Estonia supports Latvia joining the OECD and is monitoring the experience of Latvia's EU presidency

Meeting in Riga with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that developing defence cooperation in the Baltic Sea region is very important. “What is also important is the presence of our allies in the region and organizing various exercises,” Paet said and thanked Latvia for participating in the Spring Storm military exercise with one infantry company.

Paet said that Estonia supports Latvia's accession to the OECD and would like to gain experience from Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of next year.

On the topic of ongoing developments in Ukraine, Paet noted that Sunday's Presidential elections are crucial for the future of Ukraine. “Free, democratic and transparent Presidential elections in Ukraine are important in terms of resolving the crisis, for the further implementation of reforms and for building up a state based on the rule of law," the Estonian Foreign Minister said, who together with Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende and Danish Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard is on a visit to Kyiv. “The Ukrainian people must have the opportunity to decide the future of their country through peaceful means,” Past said.

Estonian and Latvian Foreign Minister also talked about regional issues such as energetics and the Rail Baltic railway connection. Paet stated that the cooperative work and coordinated approach of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are important for guaranteeing energy security. "This year energetics is a Baltic, as well as a Nordic-Baltic NB8 cooperation priority for Estonia,” Paet noted. He added that reaching a consensus quickly on the topic of creating the Rail Baltic joint venture is essential.

Estonian-Latvian economic relations are very good according to Paet. Latvia is an investment destination country for Estonian entrepreneurs and is in third place among general trading partners.
