Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: the Ukraine presidential election’s clear result enhances political stability

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that the results of the presidential elections in Ukraine show Ukrainians’ determination. “The strong mandate given to new President Petro Poroshenko is crucial for the stability of Ukraine. This will allow the internal unity of Ukrainian society to move forward,” Paet noted. “Ukrainians’ activism and high rate of participation in the elections shows that people are not indifferent and are very interested in their country's future and well-being,” he said.

While in Kyiv on Friday, Foreign Minister Paet also emphasized the importance of the presidential elections for Ukraine’s further development. “Without a doubt, the security situation in Ukraine is key, but the implementation of reforms in order to strengthen the state governed by the rule of law, reduce corruption, ensure the functioning of the market economy and strengthen civil society are also essential,” the Estonian foreign minister said.

Estonia has supported the organising and transpiring of transparent and peaceful Ukrainian presidential elections by sending OSCE election observation mission observers to Ukraine.

Long-term observers will be in Ukraine from March 27 to June 3 and short-term observers began a ten-day mission on May 20. The long-term observers are monitoring both the organization and conduct of the elections. The task of the short-term observers was to monitor the elections on election day.

Estonia has financially supported the activities of the OSCE special mission to Ukraine.
