Estonia considers the so-called elections in the self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk republics illegal

02.11.2014

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Russian-supported so-called elections in the self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk republics today are illegal. “We condemn the carrying out of these elections, which are in violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty and the agreements reached in Minsk in September, which stipulate that local elections must be organised in certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts according to Ukrainian legislature. The current events undermine the chances of finding a lasting political solution to the conflict,” Foreign Minister Paet added.

Paet stated that it is extremely regrettable that Russia has promised to recognize the so-called elections. “Russia must start fulfilling its commitments taken on by signing the Minsk Protocol and must stop destabilizing the situation in Eastern Ukraine,” he added.
