Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus on the Minsk negotiations: It is too early to give assessments before the agreement is actually enforced

13.02.2015

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus pointed out that after lengthy negotiations regarding the agreement reached in Minsk, steps leading to real implementation are the most important. “Both during negotiations and after the agreement was signed, incessant fighting was going on in eastern Ukraine. The next few days before the ceasefire comes into effect will be hard. It is essential that the ceasefire actually come into effect and that no new escalations involving loss of life occur prior to that time. Words and signatures have been put down on paper before. Adherence to them is what counts,” the foreign minister stressed. The foreign minister commended the efforts of the leaders of Germany and France. “These diplomatic efforts deserve full recognition,” she added.

Pentus-Rosimannus stressed that what was agreed must be implemented while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. “For this reason, the most critical things to keep in mind when assessing the implementation of the agreements continues to be the withdrawal of Russian armed forces and equipment, stopping the support of separatists and the restoration of border control by Ukraine,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said. “No changes can be made to the sanctions policy until the situation in Ukraine has actually changed and the agreement is fulfilled,” she added.

According to Pentus-Rosimannus, the agreement reached by the Ukrainian government and the IMF as part of the reforms program is very good news. “The IMF’s program is of critical importance for stabilizing Ukraine’s economic situation and implementing reforms,” the minister stressed.
