Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus opened the new Estonian Embassy building in Beijing

22.01.2015

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus opened the new Estonian Embassy building in the Chinese capital of Beijing. It is the third such building which has been built specifically for use as an embassy of the Republic of Estonia.

“The government's 2006 decision to build a new, representational embassy building in Beijing is proof that we consider maintaining a long-term relationship with China to be important. The new building will certainly contribute to Estonia being more visible in China,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said.

According to Pentus-Rosimannus, China is the most important partner in Asia for Estonia and the entire European Union and therefore maintaining friendly relations with such a large country is of great importance for Estonia. “The revitalized embassy will help to strengthen economic relations between the two countries and will allow us to thereby support Estonian entrepreneurs wishing to enter the Chinese market, but also to better serve the tourism sector and the interests of Estonian citizens,” the Foreign Minister added.

In preparing to construct Estonia's new embassy building in Beijing, an architectural competition was organized in 2008 and the winning entry was “Tetris” (authors Andres Põime, Lauri Vaimel and Liisa Põime). Construction began in 2012. Currently, the embassy building is a nominee for the title of Concrete Building of the Year for 2014, a competition organised by the Concrete Association of Estonia and the Union of Estonian Construction Material Producers. The winner of the award will be announced in March.

The Estonian Ambassador to China is Toomas Lukk. In addition to the Embassy in Beijing, Estonia also has a Consulate General in Shanghai and Honorary Consuls in Macau and Hong Kong.
