Ambassador Bambus met with athletes from Saaremaa competing in Jersey

Yesterday, on June 29, the Estonian Ambassador in London Lauri Bambus met with athletes from Saaremaa island competing at the International Island Games in Jersey. According to the Ambassador, it is a great joy to see that such a large delegation of Estonian athletes have travelled to the games. “Almost a hundred athletes from Saaremaa are representing their island at the Island Games, but in addition to this, they are helping to introduce Estonia in a broader context,” Bambus noted.

The Ambassador expressed hope that the games will once again be a success for Estonians. “At previous games, our athletes have had great achievements. We wish everyone much success at these games,” Bambus said at his meeting with the athletes. The Ambassador also watched the football match between Saaremaa and Menorca yesterday.

In addition to welcoming the athletes, the Estonian ambassador met with Jersey leaders. At meetings with Lieutenant Governor of Jersey John McColl, Jersey Bailiff William Bailhache and Chief Minister of Jersey Ian Gorst, opportunities to develop cooperation between Estonia and Jersey were discussed. At a meeting with the Chairman of Digital Jersey Paul Masterton, how Estonia could share its ICT experience with the people of Jersey was discussed. “Jersey is particularly interested in our experience with e-governance and the development and implementation of digital services,” Bambus said, adding that in the future we hope to cooperate closely with the island in this field.

The Island Games are taking place for the 16th time and Estonia is being represented with a near hundred member delegation from Saaremaa. Estonian athletes will compete in nine areas: track and field, cycling, shooting, men's basketball and football, men's and women's volleyball, golf, swimming and sailing. The Island Games is an international sporting event, which takes place on odd years since 1985. Representatives of islands with a population of less than 125 000 from all over the globe take part in the games. The participating islands are united in the International Island Games Association, comprised of 24 members. For more information about the games:
