Estonia wishes to intensify cooperation with Denmark in the areas of economy and cybersecurity

10.09.2015

Yesterday, while meeting with her Danish colleague Kristian Jensen, Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand discussed possibilities for closer cooperation in the areas of economy and cyber security, as well as regarding defence issues and development cooperation. Foreign Minister Kaljurand presented her Danish colleague with an invitation to visit Estonia.

On the subject of defence cooperation, the Foreign Minister pointed out that Denmark has participated in several Baltic air policing missions. “The Danish Air Force was the first, who participated in the air policing mission at Ämari. We also very much await their return to Ämari,” the Foreign Minister said, and thanked her colleague for the investment in air policing.

The Foreign Ministers also discussed cooperation in economic relations and agreed that there are still a lot of opportunities to be taken advantage of.

Kaljurand and Jensen discussed ways to strengthen cross-border cooperation in the field of cyber security and e-solutions. “Freedom of the Internet, e-governance and cyber-crime often have a cross-border dimension, which requires countries to cooperate more effectively. Estonia and Denmark could cooperate more in this field as well,“ the Foreign Minister added.

Estonia and Denmark wish to find opportunities for joint activities in the area of development cooperation with countries south of Europe.

Yesterday Foreign Minister Kaljurand took part in the Danish-Estonian Society’s 25th anniversary celebration in Copenhagen. “The support of our Danish friends has been invaluable in regaining our independence and in strengthening bilateral relations in the years that followed,“ the Foreign Minister said.

The Danish-Estonian Society was founded on September 25, 1990, and has contributed greatly to the promotion of Danish-Estonian relations and organised cultural projects. The Chairman of the Society is Count Ulrich Holstein-Holsteinborg.

From Copenhagen, Foreign Minister Kaljurand headed to Luxembourg where she will participate in an informal meeting of the European Union Foreign Ministers taking place today and tomorrow. The EU Foreign Ministers will discuss the Middle East peace process, migration issues, Eastern Partnership and EU-Russia relations. They will also discuss the situation in Iran, then nuclear agreement and its impact on EU relations with Iran and other countries in the region. Foreign Minister Kaljurand will also meet with UK Minister of State for Europe David Lidington.
