01.08.2016

Foreign Minister Kaljurand spoke to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland this afternoon about the situation in Turkey and Jagland’s visit to Turkey. “The attempted coup, which resulted in a large numbers of deaths, deserves condemnation. I hope that Turkey will be able to restore constitutional order quickly and peacefully,” Kaljurand said. Kaljurand stressed that investigations and the administration of justice in Turkey must be carried out in full accord with the principles of the rule of law.

According to the Foreign Minister, Jagland’s visit to Turkey is a necessary and appropriate step. “It is important to maintain direct dialogue at the highest level possible with Turkey and to receive the most accurate information possible concerning measures, which the state intends to implement during crisis situations,” Kaljurand said.

It was also agreed that following the visit, Jagland will present its results to Kaljurand by phone and to the permanent representatives of the Council of Europe’s Member States in Strasbourg at an informal meeting to be held on 5 August.
